About Naxos

Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades, 428 km² of marble mountains, farming valleys, and beaches that stretch longer than the narrow crescents typical of the archipelago. The port town of Naxos (Chora) sits on the west coast beneath the Portara, the marble doorway of an unfinished 6th-century BC temple to Apollo. Behind the waterfront, the Kastro quarter climbs through Venetian archways and stone houses that belonged to the Catholic families who ruled the island for three centuries. Inland, the landscape opens into terraced fields where potatoes and citrus grow, and villages like Apiranthos and Filoti cling to the slopes of Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades at 1,004 meters.

The beaches run the length of the southwest coast. Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna are the closest to Chora, wide and shallow with fine sand. Plaka extends for several kilometers farther south, less developed, backed by low dunes and the occasional taverna. Mikri Vigla, at the midpoint of the coast, draws windsurfers when the meltemi picks up in summer. The east coast is rockier, less visited, with coves like Psili Ammos and Panormos reached by rough roads.

Naxos produces its own food in a way few Cycladic islands still do. The valleys yield potatoes with protected designation, Graviera cheese aged in mountain dairies, and kitron, a citrus liqueur distilled from the leaves of the citron tree. Tavernas in the villages serve what comes from nearby — grilled lamb, fried potatoes, tomato fritters in summer. The island has enough going on that it does not depend entirely on August, and enough space that even in August it does not feel overrun.

Suggested itineraries
3 days
Base in Chora. Walk the Kastro and the waterfront, swim at Agios Prokopios or Agia Anna. Drive or bus to one mountain village — Apiranthos or Chalki — for lunch and a sense of the interior. An evening at the Portara for sunset.
5 days
Add Plaka beach for a quieter swim, a day trip to the Tragea valley visiting Chalki and Filoti, and a hike partway up Mount Zas or to the Kouros statues near Apollonas. Time to try a village taverna and a proper meal in Chora.
7+ days
Settle into the rhythm. Spend a day on the east coast (Moutsouna or Psili Ammos), explore Apiranthos and the marble villages in detail, take a day trip by ferry to a Small Cyclades island like Koufonisia or Iraklia. Rent a car and drive the back roads. Cook with what you find at the produce stands.
